Note to JULIUS CAESAR, 5.1.76,"Epicurus"

Epicurus (341 BCE - 270 BCE) was a Greek philosopher whose teachings were well-known and influential at the time of the events portrayed in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. According to Wikipedia, "Epicurus taught that although the gods exist, they have no involvement in human affairs," and so — as Cassius knows — they would not send any omens.
