A Roman legion was led into the battle by a standard-bearer, who held aloft the ensign of the legion. The image above is a modern replica of a Roman ensign. The pole which holds the banner is surmounted by an eagle encircled with a victory wreath, so it is natural that Roman soldiers should consider it a good omen for two eagles to perch on their ensign.
