Note to Twelfth Night, 3.2.80, "the new map with the augmentation of the Indies"
This passage probably refers to Edward Wright's "A Chart of the World on Mercator's Projection" published in The Principall Navigations, Voiages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation (1598-1600), compiled by Richard Hakluyt. The phrase "the augmentation of the Indies" could refer either to the fact that the map showed more of the East Indies (Indonesia) than previous maps, or to the fact that the West Indies (Caribbean Islands and North America) appeared larger than in previous maps.
To Maria, the most important feature of the map is that it is criss-crossed with many lineslines indicating latitude and longitude, and rhumb lines, which radiate from various points on the map. (A rhumb line indicates the path of a ship if it maintains a fixed compass direction.) Maria's witty point is that Malvolio's attempt to hold his smile turns his face into a mass of wrinkles going every which way.
