pulpiter: preacher. —The original text has "Jupiter" for "pulpiter," but the rest of the sentence doesn't seem to fit with "Jupiter." The emendation, "pulpiter," was first suggested by James Spedding, scholar (1808-1881) and editor of Bacon's works.
