Discussion Questions: Comparing Sense and Sensibility and Jane Eyre

[My general premise is that Sense and Sensibility represents a development of the comedy of manners, characteristic of the Restoration and Eighteenth Century, and that Jane Eyre represents an outlook characteristic of the Romantic Era. Answer the questions for each novel, then make comparisons.]
  1. Title and Plot: What does the title imply about the focus of the novel? What is the essential problem that must be solved by the main characters (Elinor and Marianne in Sense and Sensibility and Jane in Jane Eyre)?
  2. Point of View: Who is telling the story? What are the narrator's values? Be prepared to quote two or three passages to support your point.
  3. Issues of class: Who is respected by society (not necessarily by the narrator) and who is disdained? What problems do class issues cause for the heroine(s)? How are those problems resolved?
  4. Outcome: Let's say that the novel ends happily. What is the definition of that happiness? What unhappy possibilities have been avoided?
