English Drama to 1564

Note:

My primary source for the information on this page is The Wikipedia Page on English drama

In medieval English drama there are two main forms, the Mystery Play (sometimes called the Miracle Play) and the Morality Play.
The Mystery Play (sometimes called the Miracle Play)
--The reason for the two names.
--An Example: The Second Shepherd's Play

--The last performances of the two most complete "cycles":

"The most complete is the York cycle of forty-eight pageants. They were performed in the city of York, from the middle of the fourteenth century until 1569. There are also the Towneley plays of thirty-two pageants, once thought to have been a true 'cycle' of plays and most likely performed around the Feast of Corpus Christi probably in the town of Wakefield, England during the late Middle Ages until 1576." [Shakespeare was born in 1564; the first purpose-built theater in England, The Theatre, opened for business in 1576.]

The Morality Play
--definition: "Morality plays are a type of allegory in which the protagonist is met by personifications of various moral attributes who try to prompt him to choose a Godly life over one of evil"
--an example: Everyman -- dates from about 1510

Maybe young Shakespeare saw Morality plays in Stratford, or maybe he saw Gorboduc.
