Foils
Here is a link to a definition of the literary term "foil."
- How is Bianca a foil to Katherine?
- How is Grumio a foil to Petruchio?
- How is Hortensio a foil to Lucentio?
- At the end of the play, we see three married couples. How do the marriages of the other two couples help us to understand the marriage of Katherine and Petruchio?
"I am a foil to" game:
The speaker for a half group assumes the role of a character in the play and states one of the character's qualities, saying "I am [3 words max], and therefore a foil to [one/two] other character/s." The correct answers for this statement and the rationales for the statement should be written down and handed to the judges. The the other half of the group tries to fill in the blanks, saying "you are [character], who is a foil to [character name/s, because . . ." The judges will award 1 point for each correct name and each reasonably close rationale.
For the first two rounds, each half-group will take two names from a hat.
