Sections 16 - 18 (Line 1050 ff.): In the celebration of Beowulf's defeat of Grendel a song is sung about the experiences of Hnaef's sister Hildeburh, the wife of Finn. Later on Hrothgar's queen, Wealhtheow, speaks against the idea of Hrothgar adopting Beowulf as his heir, expresses confidence that Hrothulf, Hrothgar's nephew, will protect her two sons (Hrethric and Hrothmund) should Hrothgar die prematurely . [NOTE: Other sources say that after Hrothgar's death Hrothulf killed both Hrethric and Hrothmund and took over the kingdom.] Wealhtheow then presents Beowulf with a golden necklace, praises him, and expresses confidence that he will be kind to her sons.
From Line 1925: Hygd, queen to Hygelac, who is Beowulf's lord, is compared to the princess Thryth, who "showed violent arrogance."
Line 1981:Upon Beowulf's return to the hall of his lord Hygelac, Hygelac's Hygd ("Hæreðes dohtor"), delivers goblets of mead to the men.
Line 2016 ff.: In telling Hygelac of his adventures at the court of Hrothgar, Beowulf mentions that Hrothgar's daughter, Freawaru, helped serve the drinks, then goes on to comment on Freawaru's upcoming marriage to Prince Ingeld, of a rival tribe, the Heathobards.
Line 2354 ff.: After the death of his lord, Hygelac, Beowulf declines the throne offered to him by Hygelac's queen, Hygd.
Line 3150 ff.: At Beowulf's funeral, a solitary woman of his tribe keens a song about how bad times are ahead for the tribe, now that the tribe's protector, Beowulf, is dead.
